Our EQUALITY & INCLUSIVITY Policy

1.  Our Policy Aims

THIS POLICY WILL BE ATTACHED TO EVERY & ALL MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATION FOR FRIENDS OF MINA ROAD PARK from MINA ROAD PARK  GROUP COMMITTEE. All Members will be alerted to this Policy. This Policy will form part of our Membership Agreement:

Mina Road Park Group recognises that Mina Road Park is accessed & enjoyed by many diverse & different residents of St Werburhgs & its surrounding neighbourhoods, & it is determined to continue to make the park available, accessible, inviting & welcoming to every Member of Friends of Mina Road Park, & every user of the park, regardless of sex, gender, sexuallity, ethnicity, religion, faith, socia-economic status, or ability, with a strong awareness of what constitutes exclusion or discrimination.

We aim to include every resident, volunteer & visitor equally in activities & events, & will uphold & protect every participant’s right to volunteer & enjoy the park without fear or experience of discrimination in any form. This includes those considered on the edges of conventional society who may make use of the park in exceptional ways, including social/street-drinkers, the homeless & controlled-substance users.

We will be aware, respectful, & mindful of all residents’, volunteers’ & visitors’ needs, requirements, choices & behaviour, with the ambition to include & involve everyone possible while being safe within Human Rights, Hate Crime, & Misuse of Substances legislation.

Where necessary we will endeavour to access support agencies for those who may benefit from their intervention, or Law Enforcement Officers if their expertise is required.

Many ethnicities do not access local Public Spaces and so, as part of our Community Events Programme, we will contact & invite local religious & ethnic communities & groups to celebrate communally in the park. This will include observing special Festivals including but not limited to Hanaka, Diwali, Solstices, & Ramadan etc. as well as established UK Festivals during spring, autumn & winter.

We will also endeavour to observe & celebrate positive, progressive, inclusive carnivals, festivals, parades & activities that promote & support social diversity & cohesion, but will not tolerate extremist, divisive, discriminatory beliefs, activities, agendas or practices.

Mina Road Park is a Public Open Space & therefore covered & protected by many National Laws & Local By-Laws: as a Community Interest Management Committee Mina Road Park Group will respect, observe & abide by all legislation pertaining to the Park, its neighbourhood & society, & expect all Members of Friends of Mina Road Park & the park’s visitors to do likewise.

2.  What we will you do

Mina Road Park is already fully accessible to visitors of any & all needs, with pavement-level tarmac paths, a wide entrance, & two gentle-gradient bridges, with several nearby mobility-accessible bus-stops on the 5 route.

Wherever possible we will convene General Meetings at times convenient & accommodating to attendees, & in fully-accessible venues.

While there aren’t any toilet facilities in the Park, on WorkParty Activity & Community Events days we will liaise with our local Community Centre to ensure that fully-accessible toilets are available. These are <>500m from the widest, easiest park access.

Wherever possible we will email & leaflet & poster details about Activities & Events to local community & religious & education venues & establishments, including local churches & temples, & centres & schools.

If possible we will endeavour to translate our print-information into multiple, diverse languages.

3. Our Code of Conduct Policy

3.1 Our Equality Policy

Mina Road Park Group & Friends of Mina Road Park will not discriminate on the grounds of sex, ethnicity (including colour, ethnic or national origin), sexual orientation, disability, gender identity, sex reassignment, religious, or political belief, pregnancy, maternity or paternity, marital status, socio-economic status, or age. The Committee will advise & decide at all times on any & all instances of discrimination within the Committee, Membership or wider group.

3.2 Conduct, & Dispute Resolution

  • Any offensive behaviour including ethnicist, ableist, sexist, homophobic, or discriminatory remarks (whether in person, in writing, or on social-media), will not be tolerated.

  • Any reports to the Committee of such behaviour (whether in person or writing) will be taken seriously & investigated as thoroughly as possible.

  • Anyone behaving in an offensive way or breaking this Equal Opportunities Policy will be asked to publicly apologise in person & in writing & not repeat any discriminatory or anti-social behaviour. They will then be required not to attend further meetings or to resign from the group or be removed from the group if an apology is not given or the behaviour is repeated or not moderated. The individuals concerned shall have the right to arbitration by the management committee, accompanied by a friend, before a final decision is made.

  • If any behaviour causes severe upset of distress & cannot be resolved through arbitration, or is deemed to constitute a breach of Hate Crime Laws, the matter & any/all witnesses or evidence will be immediately reported to The Police.

4. Reviewing our Equality & Diversity Policy

THIS POLICY WILL BE ATTACHED TO EVERY & ALL MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATION FOR FRIENDS OF MINA ROAD PARK from MINA ROAD PARK  GROUP COMMITTEE. All Members will be alerted to this Policy. This Policy is a partner to our Constitution & will form part of our Membership Agreement.

This Policy will be an Agenda Item every AGM, & as a minimum will be fully reviewed every two years or whenever changes in UK National Law are made or whenever a Member of Friends of Mina Road Park raises an idea/issue, whichever is soonest.

  • We will make sure all new members are aware of our policy, and that we discuss and review it regularly.

  • We will keep it in mind in our day-to-day work and regularly think about how we could improve it to make things in our group run better for everyone.

  • If somebody in the group feels discriminated against or harassed, we will refer to this policy to ensure any dispute is dealt with in line with the agreements included here.

  • If anyone finds there is something missing from this, we will document the omission and return to the Group to discuss amending the policy.
